Teaching at ETH Zurich
I was involved in the organization of the Reading Club Series, a self-help reading group where we have been talking about
- Gaussian Processes
- Dimensionality Reduction
- Discrete Energy Minimization in Computer Vision. We created a short summary which algorithm to use for which problem instance: Which Energy Minimization for my MRF/CRF? A Cheat Sheet
- Continuous optimization including linear programming, semi-definite programming etc
Jointly with Vittorio Ferrari I co-organized the Vision and Sports Summer School 2009 and Vision and Sports Summer School 2010 in Zurich !
Teaching at RWTH Aachen University
Supervised diploma and master theses
- Tobias Gass: Deformations and Discriminative Models for Image Recognition
- Tobias Weyand: Log-Linear Mixture Models for Patch-Based Object Recognition
- Jens Forster: An Integrated Tracking And Recognition Approach For Video jointly with Philippe Dreuw
- Vaishak Belle: Face Detection and Recognition with Random Forests jointly with Stefan Schiffer
- David Rybach: Appearance-based Features for Automatic Continuous Sign Language Recognition jointly with Philippe Dreuw
- Andre Hegerath: Patch-based Object Recognition
- Yu Li: Ellipse Detection and Stereo Circle Reconstruction jointly with Daniel Keysers
Supervised study projects and semester theses
Data Mining Cup Lab
The Data Mining Cup Lab is a teaching activity that I started in 2004.
In 2006 it was nominated for the RWTH teaching award and ranked second.
In 2004 and 2005, I taught it jointly with Daniel Keysers.
In 2006, 2007, and 2008, I taught it jointly with Arne Mauser.
Due to highly motivated students, this course became very successful and our teams clearly won the Data Mining Cup several times. In 2009, the rules of the Data Mining Cup were changed to disallow our very successful approach.
Information about the successes are available from the lab course website
The lab courses resulted in several publications.
A side-activity of this course resulted in very good results in the GfKl data mining competition in 2005.
Lectures
